Top Of The News - 6 May

***1. V A P O R I Z E

The FDA has the e-cigarette market in its sights. It was only a matter of time and, arguably, they are late to the party. The problem is, the train has left the station and the e-cigarette business is going to be huge.

From Washington Post

In announcing the new rules...secretary of health and human services, said, "As cigarette smoking among those under 18 has fallen, the use of other nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, has taken a drastic leap. All of this is creating a new generation of Americans who are at risk of addiction."

+ This Vox article provides a good rundown of the history and issues associated with vaping.

***2. More Trump Phenomena

House Speaker Paul Ryan on 5 May declined to support Donald Trump.

"I'm just not ready to do that, at this point, I'm not there right now, and I hope to, though, and I want to, but I think what is required is that we unify this party. And I think the bulk of the burden on unifying the party will have to come from our presumptive nominee."

So, let's see, "unify the party,"...for the GOP?, isn't this an almost laughable (sure to fail) task to give anyone?

+ This New York Times article is an excellent read, but the article title ("In Donald Trump’s Rise, Allies See New American Approach") is a "catfish." While the article talks about some of the crazy things Trump has said regarding U.S. foreign policy, it spends as much time discussing the Obama administration's unconventional employment of foreign policy. The gist is that the old ways of doing business are just that, old, and our foreign partners need to take note.

***3. Why Women Should Rule the World

This Fast Company piece reinforces my theory that women should rule the world. Key stats: The top performing companies (based on stock performance) have executive boards consisting of at least 12.5% woman; Companies whose executive teams consisted of less than 9% women had smaller market capitalizations; Of the 100+ companies participating in the World Equity Index, 36% of the employees are female, 23% are managers and 12% are executives; and Though 50% of employees in the financial industry are women, only 13% of them hold executive positions.

***4. Blockchain

The video embedded in this NPR article is the best description of the blockchain technology (best known for its association with Bitcoin), and its potential impact, I have seen.

"In three years, no one is going to be saying blockchain, but everyone is going to be using the blockchain," Adam Draper, chief executive of Boost VC, tells American Banker. "I don't say I'm going to TCP/IP you — I say I'm going to text you."

***5. Express Yourself

Great story from New York Times on an art school in District Heights, Maryland that's pumping out talented, minority artists.

The seven teachers often dip into their own pockets to pay for supplies, after quickly exhausting the $1,000 annual allowance they each receive to cover all 65 students in drawing and painting, photography, printmaking, computer graphics and art history.

Hopefully, the exposure from this this article will get this Suitland High School some more money.

+ And because we could all use a little creative, self soul-searching, check out this New Yorker piece on "The Artist's Way."

“Creative” sits right above “innovation” and “disruption” in the glossary of terms that have been co-opted by corporate America and retooled to signify an increasingly nebulous set of qualities.

What we need, instead, are new voices granting us permission to try new things in private—and then leave them be.

Just For Fun:
***Cement Shoes

Anyone who has ever watched a mob movie can describe cement shoes, but actual instances are rare. On 2 May, the body of Peter Martinez washed up near Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn and he was wearing cement shoes (a five-gallon bucket filled with concrete).

"...cement shoes are the unicorn of true crime."
